Port/Harbour Captain

The Port/Harbour Captain is a senior leadership role responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a harbour and coastal fleet. This position involves overseeing vessel navigation, crew management, and strict adherence to maritime safety and environmental regulations.

Core Responsibilities

  • Vessel Operations & Navigation: Direct day-to-day shipboard operations to ensure navigation and conduct are carried out in a safe, environmentally sound manner according to international and local standards.

  • Safety & Compliance: Implement and monitor Safety Management Systems (SMS). Ensure all equipment and crew readiness levels meet emergency response standards and that regular drills are conducted.

  • Maintenance Management: Oversee planned maintenance programs to ensure vessels and equipment are kept in optimal condition and comply with legal and industry requirements.

  • Regulatory Documentation: Monitor vessel certification status and maintain up-to-date files for all required maritime certificates and environmental permits.

  • Crew Leadership: Manage personnel-related procedures, including crew sign-ons, performance appraisals, discipline, and identifying training needs. Verify that all crew members hold valid certificates of competency and medical fitness.

  • Security & Environment: Execute Vessel Security Plans and maintain a thorough understanding of pollution regulations to ensure the fleet meets environmental protection objectives.

Technical Qualifications

  • Certification: Master 500 GT (Near Coastal) or higher.

  • Endorsements: Certificate of Competency complying with Flag State requirements and STCW endorsements.

  • Communications: GMDSS – Restricted Operator Certificate (ROC).

  • Health & Safety: Valid Marine Medical certificate, Marine First Aid/CPR, and Marine Emergency Duties (MED) training.

  • Leadership: Ability to motivate a diverse crew and foster a culture of safety and integrity.

  • Technical Proficiency: Strong understanding of maritime laws, vessel maintenance software, and advanced navigation technology.

  • Incident Management: Experience in reporting and managing accidents, hazardous situations, and non-conformities.
