Study permit: Get the right documents
The latest updates to the Study permit proof of financial support guidance on Canada.ca introduce the following key changes:
- Increased Living Expense Thresholds: For study permit applications submitted on or after September 1, 2026, single applicants studying outside Quebec must show $23,448 in living expenses for the first year (up from $22,895). Required amounts scale upward for additional family members:

- 4 people: $43,572
- Each additional member (beyond 7): +$6,318

- Strict Documentation of Income Sources: Officers will closely assess both the total amount and the origin of funds. Bank statements submitted for the required 6-month period must clearly document the income sources (e.g., employment pay stubs, savings transfers).
- Multi-Year Financial Planning: For study programs longer than one year, applicants are now required to provide a clear plan showing how they intend to finance the entire duration of their studies (e.g., multi-year scholarships, ongoing parental employment).
- Exclusion of Tuition & Travel: The living expense amounts cover basic living costs only; applicants must still demonstrate separate, sufficient funds for total tuition fees and round-trip transportation.
International students applying for a Canadian study permit must demonstrate that they have sufficient financial resources to support themselves without relying on employment in Canada. Applicants must show they can pay for their tuition fees, living expenses, and transportation costs for themselves and any accompanying family members. They are required to provide proof of funds for at least the first year of study and explain how they will finance the remainder of their program if it extends beyond one year. Immigration officers assess both the availability and source of funds to ensure students can sustain themselves throughout their studies.
Acceptable proof of financial support may include tuition payment receipts, education loans, scholarships, bank statements, Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs), proof of employment income, sponsorship letters, pension income, or rental income documents. As of September 1, 2026, a single applicant studying outside Quebec must demonstrate at least CAD $23,448 in living expenses for one year, excluding tuition and transportation costs, with higher amounts required for students bringing family members. Additional requirements may apply depending on the applicant’s country of residence and study destination.
