Government of Canada invests in Xanadu to build up advanced quantum manufacturing in Canada

by | Sep 1, 2026

The Government of Canada has announced a $195 million investment through the Strategic Response Fund to support Xanadu Quantum Technologies’ $893 million project aimed at expanding research and development capabilities and establishing advanced quantum manufacturing in Canada. The project will strengthen Canada’s position in the rapidly growing quantum technology sector while supporting domestic innovation, commercialization, and advanced technology development.

The investment will help create specialized facilities for developing, manufacturing, and commercializing quantum technologies in Canada, while fostering collaboration with Canadian research institutions and small and medium-sized businesses. The initiative aligns with Canada’s National Quantum Strategy and Defence Industrial Strategy, supporting technologies that are expected to play a critical role in cybersecurity, defence, healthcare, energy, and logistics.

What Will the Investment Support?

  • Expansion of Xanadu’s research and development facilities in Canada to accelerate the development of next-generation quantum technologies and strengthen Canada’s position as a leader in quantum innovation.
  • Establishment of advanced quantum manufacturing capabilities, enabling the company to develop, manufacture, and commercialize quantum technologies domestically rather than relying on foreign infrastructure.
  • Development of specialized manufacturing processes for integrating, packaging, testing, and assembling advanced photonic and semiconductor components used in quantum computing systems. These capabilities are essential for scaling quantum technologies from the laboratory to commercial markets.
  • Advancement of fault-tolerant quantum computing technologies, including manufacturing processes that currently do not exist at an industrial scale and are considered critical to the future of quantum computing.
  • Collaboration with Canadian universities, research institutions, and small and medium-sized businesses, helping transform Canadian research breakthroughs into market-ready products while strengthening the domestic innovation ecosystem.
  • Growth of Canada’s quantum supply chain, creating opportunities for Canadian suppliers, technology firms, and researchers while building a stronger domestic manufacturing base for emerging technologies.
  • Creation of 275 high-quality jobs in research, engineering, manufacturing, and technology development, helping build a skilled workforce for one of the world’s fastest-growing technology sectors.

Economic and Innovation Impact

The project is expected to create 275 high-quality jobs while helping Canada retain leadership in one of the world’s most promising emerging technologies. By expanding domestic manufacturing capacity, Canada aims to transform research breakthroughs into commercial products, strengthen supply chains, and increase the country’s competitiveness in advanced technologies.

The investment also supports Canada’s broader objective of building a resilient and innovation-driven economy. As quantum technologies continue to evolve, the project is expected to enhance Canada’s ability to attract investment, develop specialized talent, and generate long-term economic opportunities.

Quick Facts

  • This project will develop new capabilities for integrating, packaging, testing and assembling advanced photonic and semiconductor components used in quantum systems. A key focus of the work is qualifying manufacturing processes that are compatible with future fault-tolerant quantum computing—capabilities that do not currently exist at industrial scale.
  • The quantum sector in Canada is projected to contribute $17.7 billion to Canada’s gross domestic product (GDP) and more than 157,000 jobs by 2045.
  • As announced in December 2025, Xanadu is one of four Canadian quantum companies receiving funding of up to $23 million each through the first phase of the Canadian Quantum Champions Program.
  • The Strategic Response Fund helps Canadian industries innovate, adapt and compete in a changing global economy. It supports large-scale, transformative projects that build economic resilience, strengthen supply chains and protect good jobs in key sectors such as steel, aluminum, automotive, forest products, AI and advanced technologies.
